Tenerife has launched a 21-million-euro project to modernize its road lighting network through proactive maintenance and energy-efficient LED upgrades to enhance driver safety.

Tenerife is upgrading its road safety with a new plan to manage the island’s public lighting network. The Island Council has launched a tender for the project, with an initial budget of 9.9 million euros that could reach 21 million over the three-year contract.

This initiative aims to improve infrastructure used by more than 100,000 people every day. Led by Dámaso Arteaga, the Highways Department is moving away from simply fixing broken lights toward a proactive system of constant monitoring and preventive maintenance. The goal is to ensure that any lighting issue affecting driver safety is resolved within 24 hours.

To improve response times, the island has been split into two zones:

  • The Northern Zone: Covers major routes including the TF-5, TF-11, TF-13, TF-31, the TF-42 link, and the Las Aguas Tunnel.
  • The Southern Zone: Focuses on the TF-1, TF-2, TF-4, the Outer Ring Road, and the Guaza Bypass.

Both zones will be supported by a 24/7 on-call service available year-round.

Council President Rosa Dávila described the investment as a commitment to modernizing public assets. The plan includes upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting, which will improve visibility at roundabouts, tunnels, and junctions. This shift is designed to reduce accidents while meeting European energy-saving and sustainability standards.

The contract covers all aspects of lighting management, from monitoring control centers and cleaning equipment to measuring light levels. Through this project, the island administration aims to ensure its road network is safe, functional, and equipped to handle the demands of Tenerife’s heavy traffic and unique landscape.
