The Tenerife Island Council has launched a 16.1 million euro tender to resurface an 18.3-kilometer stretch of the TF-1 motorway to improve safety and infrastructure for the island's high daily traffic volume.

Tenerife’s main motorway, the TF-1, is set for a major upgrade. The Island Council has officially opened the tender process to resurface a critical 18.3-kilometer stretch of the road, which carries over 70,000 vehicles every day. The project, costing 16.1 million euros, aims to repair years of wear and tear between kilometer points 1+400 and 20+000.

Recognizing the motorway’s vital role in the island’s economy and logistics, the Highways Department, led by Dámaso Arteaga, has split the project into two phases to keep work efficient. The first phase, costing 8.9 million euros, covers the section from the capital to El Rosario. The second, with a budget of 7.2 million euros, will focus on the stretch between El Rosario, Candelaria, and Arafo.

Island Council President Rosa Dávila described the project as part of a broader commitment to modernizing and maintaining the island’s road network. Each phase is expected to take six months to complete, with planners working to minimize traffic disruption on this busy route.

This project follows recent improvements in Arico and Fasnia, where 30 million euros were spent to renovate 24 kilometers of road. These investments are part of an ongoing effort to improve safety on the TF-1, which requires constant maintenance due to heavy traffic and local weather conditions. By moving forward with this tender, the Island Council aims to ensure the long-term reliability of a road that is essential to the daily lives of residents and the island’s economy.
