Tenerife Launches €14 Million Upgrade for TF-1 Motorway

The Tenerife Island Council has launched a major upgrade for the TF-1, the island’s busiest motorway. A 18-kilometer stretch is set for a comprehensive overhaul to better handle the 70,000 vehicles that use the road every day. The project, costing nearly 14 million euros, aims to improve both road safety and traffic flow.

The work will take six months and is split into two sections to keep the project manageable. The first section, running from the capital to El Rosario, has been awarded to Transformaciones y Servicios, S.L. for over seven million euros. The second section, stretching from El Rosario to Güímar—passing through Candelaria and Arafo—will be handled by Señalizaciones Villar, S.A. for over six million euros.

Beyond simply resurfacing the road, the project includes several safety upgrades. Crews will install lateral rumble strips, update road signs and markings with durable thermoplastic paint, and add new safety barriers in the median. The project also prioritizes sustainability, with contractors required to use asphalt mixtures containing 50% recycled material, in line with European environmental standards.

This investment is part of a larger effort by the Island Council to maintain and extend the lifespan of Tenerife’s road network. Recent projects include landscaping near Mercatenerife and a 30-million-euro rehabilitation of 24 kilometers in the central-south area. Looking ahead to the 2026-2029 Strategic Road Plan, the council aims to upgrade over 40 kilometers of the TF-1 during this term. Once the work is finished, the contractors will be responsible for any repairs needed over a three-year warranty period.
