Tenerife Launches €12.4 Million Road Infrastructure Overhaul to Combat Storm Damage

The Tenerife Island Council is launching an emergency plan to fix structural weaknesses in the island's road network, which has become increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather. The council has set aside 1.4 million euros to overhaul the drainage system on the TF-165 road in the El Pris area of Tacoronte.

This project aims to prevent the flooding and sediment buildup that caused significant issues during Storm Therese last March, threatening both road safety and nearby homes. Work is scheduled to begin this August, pending final administrative approvals. The plan includes installing new collectors, manholes, and drainage channels to better manage rainwater.

This repair is part of a larger 12.4-million-euro program to fix damage at 29 sites across 17 different roads. These improvements, which span municipalities including La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, and La Laguna, are essential for updating slope stability and drainage systems to handle increasingly unpredictable weather.

Dámaso Arteaga, the Minister of Roads, and Tacoronte Mayor Sandra Izquierdo have been working closely to ensure the project causes as little disruption as possible. Local officials are also maintaining direct communication with El Pris residents to manage traffic and property access throughout the construction period.

Ultimately, these repairs are a proactive step toward protecting the island’s infrastructure. By improving drainage and reinforcing the road surface, the council hopes to not only recover from recent storm damage but also ensure the area is better prepared to withstand future heavy rainfall and prevent flooding.
