Tenerife Launches €1.1M Smart Sensor Network to Bolster Environmental Safety
Tenerife has awarded a €1.18 million contract to deploy an IoT-based sensor network designed to monitor environmental risks and enhance emergency response capabilities across the island.
Tenerife is taking a major step toward digitalizing its public services. The Island Council recently awarded a contract to build an advanced technological network designed to monitor the island’s territory. The project, which will cost €1,177,181.29—saving nearly €200,000 compared to the original budget—will use a long-range sensor network (LoRaWAN) and an intelligent management platform (IoT).
Over the next three years, this system will serve as an early warning network for environmental risks. Given Tenerife’s rugged landscape and ecological sensitivity, the ability to quickly detect forest fires or floods is vital for emergency services.
Island Council President Rosa Dávila described the initiative as a key part of a modernization strategy focused on sustainability and public safety. Juan José Martínez, the Minister of Research, Innovation, and Development, added that by centralizing data, the government can move away from simply reacting to emergencies and toward anticipating potential threats, ultimately making better use of public resources.
This project reflects the growing "Smart City" trend, where environmental sensors are essential for managing areas with high populations and significant natural value. By gathering data into one platform, the Council aims to improve safety and ensure that future decisions are based on objective facts, helping the island manage its resources more efficiently in the face of climate change.
