Tenerife Issues Weather Warnings for High Winds and Rough Seas

Source: El Día

Tenerife is under a yellow wind warning and a maritime pre-alert as authorities urge caution due to expected gusts of 70 km/h and waves reaching up to five meters.

Tenerife is bracing for a shift in weather today as atmospheric instability intensifies across the island. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and the regional government have issued warnings for adverse conditions affecting both high-altitude areas and the coastline throughout Thursday.

A yellow-level wind warning is in effect for the metropolitan area from early morning until midnight, with gusts expected to reach 70 kilometers per hour. Additionally, the Canary Islands government has maintained a pre-alert for rough seas across the archipelago, a measure that has been in place since Tuesday night.

Forecasters expect strong northwest winds to hit the island’s central peaks, the northeastern tip, the southern slopes of the metropolitan area, and the southwestern sector. Maritime conditions are also set to worsen, with waves reaching between 4 and 5 meters. Navigation will be particularly difficult in the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera, where winds could reach force 7, with occasional gusts of force 8.

This follows a Wednesday of overcast skies, light rain, and a temperature drop that brought frost to the area around Mount Teide. Santa Cruz de Tenerife should expect a cloudy day with intermittent showers alongside the strengthening winds.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution. The combination of high winds and rough seas will make travel difficult, particularly on mountain roads, exposed mid-altitude areas, and northern coastal stretches. Residents and visitors are advised to take care when planning outdoor activities.
