Tenerife Issues Grade 1 Wildfire Alert Amid Rising Temperatures
Tenerife has issued a Grade 1 wildfire alert and implemented strict fire-prevention restrictions across the island following a government-issued heatwave warning.
Tenerife is bracing for a new challenge as temperatures begin to climb. The Island Council has activated a Grade 1 wildfire alert as of 8:00 a.m. this Wednesday, following a heatwave warning issued by the Canary Islands government.
This alert applies to all areas of the island—including the North, South, and both Anaga regions—and introduces strict rules to reduce the risk of fires. Blanca Pérez, the Minister of Natural Environment, has urged the public to exercise extreme caution, noting that the current weather makes the island's forests particularly vulnerable.
To prevent accidental fires, the following activities are now prohibited in high-risk areas:
- Fire and Cooking: All barbecues and portable stoves are banned.
- Smoking: Smoking and vaping are strictly forbidden.
- Machinery: The use of equipment that could create sparks or heat—such as welding tools, angle grinders, and brush cutters—is temporarily suspended.
- Pyrotechnics: The use of fireworks is prohibited.
Despite these restrictions, the island’s trails, forest tracks, and camping areas remain open. You can still hike, exercise, or hunt, provided you strictly follow the bans on fire and smoking. Roads and access to private property remain unaffected.
These new measures are in addition to the existing, permanent restrictions already in place for Teide National Park and the areas impacted by the major wildfire in August 2023.
With temperatures expected to rise further on Thursday, authorities are asking residents and visitors to check the Tenerife ON website for the latest updates on natural spaces before heading out. These restrictions will remain in place until further notice.
