Tenerife Strengthens Restrictions Due to Wildfire Threat: What is Prohibited
Tenerife is introducing restrictions on making fires and using tools that create sparks due to the high risk of forest fires caused by heat, low humidity, and a dust storm.
On Tuesday, restrictions will come into effect in Tenerife to prevent forest fires. This means that it will be forbidden to light fires in recreational areas and in nature, as well as to use fireworks.
Walking on forest roads and trails is permitted, but local authorities advise against it and urge extreme caution to avoid causing a fire.
Specifically, the following is prohibited:
- Barbecuing, making bonfires, or using gas stoves in the mountains and outdoors.
- Using any tools that could create sparks: trimmers, welding machines, any sparking equipment, or angle grinders.
- Smoking in recreational areas, campsites, on roads and trails, viewpoints, and other public places in the mountains.
At the same time, driving on roads and trails, logging, and hunting are allowed.
These measures have been introduced because the Canary Islands (specifically El Hierro, La Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria) have declared a warning about a high risk of forest fires.
The reason is heat (temperatures may rise above 30 degrees, and in some places up to 36), low humidity (20-40%), and a dust storm.
Wind is also forecast in the mountains.
In addition, local authorities have warned of possible strong winds, dust storms, sea storms, and high temperatures.
