Tenerife has committed 6.83 million euros over two years to enhance its wildfire surveillance and firefighting capabilities through a new partnership with the public company Gesplan.

Tenerife is upgrading its wildfire response strategy, with the island council committing 6.83 million euros to strengthen surveillance and firefighting efforts. This investment aims to provide more professional and stable support during the periods when the island is most vulnerable to fires.

The funding will be split over two years, with 3.2 million euros allocated for 2026 and 3.6 million for 2027. The council has tasked the public company Gesplan with the work to streamline operations and take advantage of tax exemptions, ensuring that every euro is used as effectively as possible. The initial two-year contract can be extended for an additional two years and follows the guidelines set by the Canary Islands’ emergency response plan for forest fires.

To ensure accountability, the council has set up a payment system that releases funds every two months only after tasks have been completed. Gesplan will also take direct responsibility for managing all personnel and equipment to ensure the entire operation remains transparent and well-coordinated.

Island President Rosa Dávila emphasized that this plan balances the urgent need for civil protection with responsible financial management. The project has received full technical and financial approval and includes strict requirements for data privacy and the use of environmentally friendly materials. By taking these steps, the council aims to build a faster, more reliable response system to protect Tenerife’s fragile ecosystems and natural heritage from the increasing threat of wildfires.
