The Tenerife Island Council has allocated 5.1 million euros to modernize local farms and attract younger workers to the agricultural sector in an effort to combat an aging rural workforce.

The Canary Islands are making it a top priority to bring younger workers into the agricultural sector, aiming to reverse the aging trend of the rural workforce. Following the "Sowing the Future" forum held at the Tacoronte Agricultural Training School, the Tenerife Island Council announced a 5.1 million euro budget for this year to help modernize local farms and provide much-needed financial support.

This move is a response to a worrying national trend: fewer than 10% of agricultural and livestock workers are under the age of 40. This decline threatens not only the local economy but also the preservation of the landscape and the islands' ability to produce their own food. Valentín González, the Island Councilor for the Primary Sector, stressed that the industry’s future depends on embracing digital technology and more sustainable farming methods.

In partnership with the Canary Islands Government, the Council hopes this funding will lower operating costs and encourage farmers to work together. The ultimate goal is to modernize the industry and make farming an appealing career path for the next generation.

The forum provided a space for young professionals to speak directly with government officials. The event also included a visit to the Mar y Sol eco-farm in Icod de los Vinos, where attendees saw organic farming in action. This practical experience helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and the day-to-day realities of working the land.
