Tenerife Invests €3.5 Million to Upgrade Malpaso Waste Management Facility
The Cabildo de Tenerife has invested €3.5 million to transform the Malpaso waste plant in Arona into an integrated logistics center serving seven municipalities with modernized processing facilities and new sustainable services.
Waste management in southern Tenerife has received a major upgrade following a €3.5 million investment in the Malpaso plant in Arona. The Cabildo de Tenerife has transformed the site into an integrated logistics center designed to streamline waste processing for seven municipalities: Arona, Adeje, Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora, Granadilla de Abona, Vilaflor, and San Miguel de Abona.
The facility now offers a wider range of services, including bulky waste shredding and a new "clean point" for residents. It also features a dedicated area for caravan maintenance, where travelers can empty grey and black water tanks and refill their drinking water. According to Cabildo President Rosa Dávila, this service is the first of its kind and will soon be rolled out at other locations, including Las Chafiras and the island’s main Environmental Complex.
Technical improvements at the site include new roofing for handling bulky waste, updated service facilities, and new collection booths. The plant’s leachate pre-treatment system has also been reinforced to better protect the local environment. Blanca Pérez, the Minister of Natural Environment, noted that this project serves as the new blueprint for the "Tenerife+Sostenible" initiative, which aims to modernize waste management across the southwest of the island.
This investment is a direct response to the rising demand caused by population growth and tourism. By shifting toward more versatile logistics centers, the island is not only improving its waste processing capacity but also aligning with European circular economy regulations to ensure more sustainable and efficient waste management.
