Tenerife Invests €20 Million to Expand Public Bus Fleet
Tenerife is investing €20 million to add 37 new buses to its public transport fleet by 2027, aiming to reduce traffic congestion and increase passenger capacity between its major cities.
Tenerife is boosting its public transport network after the Island Council approved a €20 million investment to add 37 new buses to the fleet by 2027.
This move aims to ease traffic congestion, particularly on the busy route between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna. Island President Rosa Dávila explained that 23 of the new vehicles will be large, articulated buses designed to increase seating capacity on lines 014 and 015 by 42%. This is expected to better handle the high volume of passengers traveling between the island’s two main cities.
The plan also focuses on operational flexibility. Three fully electric, 11-meter buses will be introduced to navigate the challenging terrain of the Anaga Rural Park. Additionally, eight new buses will serve the route between Puerto de la Cruz and Buenavista, with the remaining vehicles assigned to improve coverage in mid-altitude areas.
This latest investment brings the Island Council’s total spending on transport to over €145 million this term. With 388 new vehicles now added to the network, officials state that Tenerife’s fleet is among the most modern and sustainable in Spain. These upgrades are part of a broader effort to provide more efficient public transport and reduce the island's reliance on private cars in the face of rising population and tourism numbers.
