Tenerife Invests €19.6 Million in New Bus Fleet to Meet Record Passenger Demand

The Tenerife Island Council is investing 19.6 million euros to purchase 37 new buses, marking a significant step in its commitment to sustainable public transport. This move comes as the island’s transport operator, Titsa, faces record-breaking demand, having served over 87 million passengers in 2025.

The purchase is part of a larger 44.7 million euro investment plan. It includes 34 mild-hybrid buses and three fully electric vehicles. To help reduce traffic congestion on the island’s busiest routes, 13.2 million euros will be spent on 23 large, 18-meter articulated buses for the popular Santa Cruz to La Laguna lines (014 and 015). The remaining funds will cover eight 15-meter hybrid buses for line 363, as well as six 11-meter units (three hybrid and three electric) to further modernize the fleet.

While these new buses are expected to arrive by late 2027, their operation depends on the Council’s ability to hire more drivers. This latest investment continues a broader strategy that has seen 351 vehicles replaced over the last few years for over 125 million euros, keeping the average age of the fleet at just three years. This effort also includes the recent introduction of the Canary Islands' first double-decker buses to handle higher passenger volumes.

In addition to transport, the Council’s newly approved budget includes several other key projects:

• 4 million euros for housing reconstruction in La Palma following the Tajogaite volcano eruption.
• 1 million euros for humanitarian aid in Venezuela.
• 8.3 million euros for urgent road repairs in Tenerife following damage caused by storm Therese, particularly in areas like Anaga and Tacoronte. An additional 3.2 million euros is earmarked for these road works in 2027.
