The Tenerife Island Council has invested 179,000 euros in 19 mobile emergency units to enhance the disaster response capabilities of local Civil Protection groups against increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo) has invested 179,000 euros in new technical equipment for the island’s Civil Protection groups. This move marks a shift in strategy to better manage the risks posed by the increasingly unstable climate affecting the Canary Islands. The investment is designed to ensure that all municipalities have a consistent, high-level capacity to respond to the extreme weather events that have become more frequent in recent years.

The initiative provides 19 mobile units, each equipped for critical emergency response. These trailers include telescopic lighting, electric generators, drainage pumps, specialized tools, and road signage. By attaching these units to existing municipal vehicles, local teams will be better prepared to handle flooding or power outages independently and efficiently.

The equipment is being distributed to 19 municipalities: Arafo, Candelaria, El Rosario, El Sauzal, Garachico, Granadilla, Güímar, Icod de los Vinos, La Matanza, La Orotava, La Victoria, Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, San Miguel de Abona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Santa Úrsula, Tacoronte, and Tegueste. San Juan de la Rambla is not included in this rollout, as its Civil Protection structure was established after the bidding process began in June 2025.

Island President Rosa Dávila described the project as a proactive step in disaster prevention, noting Tenerife’s vulnerability to threats like heavy rainfall and forest fires. Blanca Pérez, the councilor for the area, and Iván Martín, the island’s director of Security and Emergencies, added that the quality of frontline equipment is vital for managing complex crises. Through this investment, the Cabildo aims to bridge the gap between different town councils, ensuring a uniform and effective emergency response across the entire island.
