The Canary Islands Ministry of Health is investing €10 million to modernize Tenerife’s primary healthcare network through the construction of new clinics and the renovation of aging medical facilities.

Tenerife’s primary healthcare network is undergoing a major overhaul following a €10 million investment from the Canary Islands Ministry of Health. Since mid-2023, the government has been working to modernize the island’s medical facilities, replacing aging infrastructure—some of which has been in use for over 30 years—with new buildings and upgraded services.

A significant portion of the funding has gone toward constructing new local clinics. Recent projects include facilities in Las Chafiras, Buenavista del Norte, and El Sauzal, with costs ranging from €1 million to €2.2 million each. The Barroso clinic in La Orotava also opened last May after a €1.3 million investment. Additionally, a new €2.3 million clinic in La Esperanza (El Rosario) is nearing completion and is currently being fitted with furniture and communication systems.

Beyond new construction, the Tenerife Primary Care Management has spent nearly €3 million improving existing centers. These upgrades focus on climate control, maintenance, and better accessibility. For example, the San José de los Llanos clinic in El Tanque received €51,000 to add dedicated observation and resuscitation areas. Diagnostic services have also been expanded with new sample collection rooms in La Laguna-Universidad and several other renovated clinics.

Looking ahead, the government has approved €6.8 million to fully renovate the Tacoronte Health Center to meet modern medical standards. Plans are also underway to expand the network in Fasnia and Tegueste, where projects are currently in the early administrative stages. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to balance the renovation of older buildings with the creation of new clinics in areas with the highest demand.
