Tenerife Invests €1.65 Million to Complete Ciudad de Esperanza Care Facility
The Tenerife Island Council has approved an additional 1.65 million euros to complete the Ciudad de Esperanza residential complex, a key project in the island's broader initiative to modernize social care and mental health support services.
Tenerife has taken a major step toward modernizing its social and healthcare services. The Island Council’s Governing Council recently approved an additional 1.65 million euros to finish the Ciudad de Esperanza residential complex in La Matanza de Acentejo. Managed by the Institute for Social and Healthcare Attention (IASS), this funding covers budget adjustments needed as construction nears completion, supported by European funds.
The project, which has a total budget of 4.45 million euros, is set to become a model for dependency care. Expected to open by mid-2025, the facility will provide 70 spaces tailored to various care needs. The design focuses on sustainability and social integration, featuring clean energy, full accessibility, and amenities like a laundry and commissary to help residents maintain their independence.
This investment is part of a wider effort to strengthen the island’s care network. The Social Action department is also supporting other community projects, including a 60,000-euro sensory room in Las Zocas (San Miguel) for people with autism spectrum disorder, and a 60,000-euro grant for the Radio ECCA Canary Foundation to provide training and support for the elderly.
Additionally, the council is promoting mental health and job training through new partnerships. By transferring space at Finca Boquín in Icod de los Vinos to the organization Afes Salud Mental, the council is launching the "Caléndula" project. This initiative uses agroecology as a form of therapy, combining social and agricultural resources to help people with mental health issues integrate into the community and improve their quality of life.
