Tenerife has introduced a fleet of double-decker buses to its TITSA network to increase passenger capacity and alleviate chronic traffic congestion on the island's major highways.

Tenerife is taking a new approach to public transport by adding double-decker buses to the TITSA fleet. The Island Council hopes this move will help ease the chronic traffic congestion on the TF-1 and TF-5 highways. As a first for interurban travel in Spain, this initiative aims to make better use of road space to accommodate the surge in passengers following the introduction of free public transport.

The thirteen new buses, built by the Girona-based company Ayats, will significantly increase seating capacity. On busy routes like the 110 line between Santa Cruz and Costa Adeje—which saw 1.2 million passengers in 2025—the capacity per vehicle will jump from 59 to 85 seats, a 44% increase. Beyond this route, the buses will also serve lines 112 and 108, connecting passengers to Los Cristianos and Icod de los Vinos.

This project is part of a larger modernization plan that has seen 351 vehicles replaced over the last three years, bringing the average age of the fleet down to about three years. Island Council President Rosa Dávila, Mobility Minister Eulalia García, and TITSA head Victoria Padilla marked the launch this Wednesday with an inaugural 30-kilometer trip, signaling the start of commercial operations.

The Council plans to continue this expansion through 2027, with 25 more interurban vehicles expected to join the fleet, bringing the total number of double-deckers to 18. By making public transport more efficient, the island aims to provide a reliable alternative to private cars and better manage the growing demand on its busiest roads.
