Tenerife Implements Emergency Traffic Restrictions in Teno Massif to Protect Access
Tenerife’s Island Council is implementing new dynamic traffic restrictions in the Teno massif to ensure emergency access for fire and rescue services during high-alert weather conditions.
The Tenerife Island Council is introducing new traffic restrictions in the Teno massif to ensure emergency services can reach the area during forest fires or severe weather. When high-alert warnings are issued, private vehicles will be barred from entering the Rural Park for tourism or recreation.
This decision follows a serious incident on August 18, when heavy traffic on the TF-436 road in Masca delayed firefighters responding to a blaze. Because this road is the only way in and out of the area, congestion poses a major threat to the safety of residents in Masca, Teno Alto, Los Carrizales, and El Palmar.
Under the new "Dynamic Access Regulation" system, the road will be kept clear for emergency use. While tourists will be turned away during emergencies, the road will remain open for residents, property owners, essential workers, maintenance crews, and public transport (Titsa buses).
Blanca Pérez, the Councilor for Natural Environment and Emergencies, and Buenavista Mayor Eva García have met with local groups to explain the plan. The restrictions will be enforced by a coordinated team including the Civil Guard, Canary Islands Police, local security, and park rangers.
Additionally, the Buenavista City Council is developing a specific evacuation plan for Masca. The TF-436 road is narrow and winding, making it difficult to navigate if it becomes clogged with parked or slow-moving cars. Residents and visitors will be notified of any restrictions through road signs, the Cabildo’s website, and official social media channels.
