Police in Arona, Tenerife, arrested two hotel workers, a chambermaid and assistant housekeeper, for allegedly stealing €9,000 from an Italian couple after meticulously planning the theft based on their daily routine.

Police in Arona, Tenerife, have arrested two hotel workers accused of stealing €9,000 from an Italian couple. The women, aged 63 and 50, worked as a chambermaid and assistant housekeeper. They reportedly planned the theft after learning the couple's daily routine.

The couple, who often stayed at the hotel, had hidden their money in various spots around their room, thinking it would be safe. They never imagined hotel staff would be involved.

When officers arrived after the couple reported the theft, they found no signs of a break-in or a messy room. Even valuable items left on the bedside tables hadn't been touched. This made investigators suspect someone working at the hotel was responsible.

After looking at all the evidence, police believed the chambermaid who cleaned the room told her colleague, the assistant housekeeper, about the money. The two women then used their knowledge of hotel operations and changed their shifts to carry out the theft without anyone noticing.

The investigation revealed that the two women knew the Italian couple's routine very well. After lunch, the couple would often spend hours sunbathing in an area visible from their room. The suspects took advantage of this time when the couple was away and surveillance was lower to enter the room and steal the cash.

Careful analysis of evidence and witness statements allowed the National Police to piece together what happened and confirm both employees were involved. They were then arrested and charged with theft.

Police noted that the case was particularly difficult because there were no obvious clues or direct witnesses to the theft. It was solved thanks to the hotel's own internal investigation, a close look at employee schedules and movements, and a review of shift rotas and cleaning logs.

This case highlights how important it is for hotels to maintain strong security measures, especially in popular tourist areas like southern Tenerife, which sees a steady stream of international visitors all year round.

The National Police advise travellers not to keep large sums of money in their rooms. Instead, they recommend using hotel safes or secure deposit services if available. They also urge people to report any suspicions or incidents immediately so authorities can act quickly.
