Tenerife Hosts Second Annual Zaperoco Fest Celebrating Canarian-Venezuelan Ties

The deep historical ties between the Canary Islands and Venezuela will be celebrated once again this Saturday, September 26, in La Laguna, Tenerife. The second annual Zaperoco Fest will take place at the Plaza del Tranvía in La Cuesta, serving as a highlight of the Canarian Day of Migration and a celebration of the cultural and culinary bonds between the two regions.

More than just a festival, the event is a tribute to the shared history of these communities. Five local associations will participate, showcasing traditional clothing from both territories alongside live percussion performances. The musical program features Venezuelan artist Scarlet Linares, supported by local parrandas and various Venezuelan musical groups.

From a social perspective, the festival aims to support the integration of the diaspora. Local officials from the La Laguna City Council and the Canary Islands Government emphasize that such events are vital for preserving the legacy of families with transatlantic roots. By hosting the festival in La Cuesta, organizers hope to bring cultural activities directly into the heart of the neighborhood.

Food is at the center of the celebration. Attendees can enjoy a wide variety of Venezuelan cuisine from a dozen stalls, two food trucks, and a dedicated chicha stand. Signature dishes like pabellón criollo, hallacas, cachapas, tequeños, empanadas, and arepas will be available throughout the day. A culinary contest will also judge the best arepas, with the winners announced at 7:00 p.m.

Organizers hope this year’s event will build on the success of the inaugural gathering, which drew nearly 2,000 people. Beyond providing a day of entertainment, the festival highlights how migration has shaped the identity, language, and daily life of modern Canarian society, ensuring these historical connections remain vibrant for future generations.
