Tenerife Hosts Over 150 Events to Celebrate Canary Islands Day
Tenerife is celebrating Canary Islands Day with over 150 events across the island, featuring traditional sports, local cuisine, and cultural performances aimed at strengthening regional identity.
Canary Islands Day is being celebrated in Tenerife this year with an ambitious schedule of over 150 events. More than just a celebration, the program aims to strengthen local identity by highlighting the island's intangible heritage, including its unique cuisine, traditional crafts, and local sports.
The festivities are spread across the island, moving beyond the capital to reach municipalities like Guía de Isora, Los Realejos, and Tegueste. In Santa Cruz, the heart of the action is centered around Calle La Noria and Plaza de España. Highlights include a concert by Los Cantadores, a showcase of local products, and an awards ceremony honoring individuals and groups such as Besay Pérez, Tajaraste, Soul Sanet, the Guachipanducy association, and Paco Tacoronte. The capital is also hosting its traditional food contest at the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena and a sardine roast at the Nuestra Señora de África Market.
La Laguna is hosting events in the Plaza del Adelantado and throughout its historic center, featuring exhibitions of Canarian wrestling and stick fighting, alongside performances by groups like Mestisay and the Agrupación Unión y Amistad. Other towns are also focusing on local traditions: Tegueste is highlighting the card game envite and traditional cooking, while La Orotava is holding a livestock fair and a folk festival featuring representatives from across the islands.
The full schedule includes a wide variety of activities, such as an envite marathon in Icod de los Vinos, the 'Ecoislas' film series, and traditional bailes de magos (folk dances) in Adeje, Arona, and Santiago del Teide. The program also touches on history and sports, with documentary screenings about folk medicine in Vilaflor and the La Guancha Trail race.
These events serve as a way to bring the community together and keep local customs alive in an increasingly globalized world. The day will conclude with a musical performance by José Vélez in the capital, featuring low-noise fireworks—a choice made to prioritize sustainability and animal welfare.
