Tenerife Hosts European Light Rail Congress to Discuss Future of Urban Mobility
San Cristóbal de La Laguna is hosting the European Light Rail Congress on March 11 and 12, where 130 international experts will gather to discuss the modernization and decarbonization of urban guided transport systems.
The Canary Islands are at the heart of a major European debate on urban mobility this week. San Cristóbal de La Laguna is hosting the European Light Rail Congress on March 11 and 12, bringing together 130 international experts to discuss the future of guided transport systems.
Tenerife was chosen as the venue because the rail industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation, driven by digitalization and the need for more efficient networks in crowded cities. The event, organized by the British consultancy Mainspring in partnership with the Island Council and the operator Metrotenerife, aims to create a roadmap for modernizing public transport infrastructure.
The congress begins this Wednesday, March 11, at 9:00 a.m. at the Espacio Mutua Tinerfeña, located at 6 Nava y Grimón Street. Eulalia García, Councilor for Mobility and President of Metrotenerife, will attend the opening alongside other officials and industry leaders.
Beyond the formal proceedings, the congress serves as a key industry barometer. Discussions will focus on expanding existing networks and using new technology to improve tram operations. As the European Union prioritizes the decarbonization of transport, these high-capacity systems are essential for helping cities reduce their reliance on private cars and move toward more sustainable, connected travel.
