Tenerife Hospital Worker Arrested for Illegal Detention and Fraud of Elderly Patient
Spanish police have arrested a nursing assistant and an accomplice for allegedly kidnapping and defrauding an elderly, isolated patient from a Tenerife hospital.
Concerns about patient safety have resurfaced following a serious case of abuse and illegal detention in Tenerife. The National Police have arrested a nursing assistant from the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria University Hospital and a male accomplice, both Spanish nationals, on charges of illegal detention and fraud.
The case, which has sparked alarm over how elderly patients are protected, involves an 80-year-old Italian man. According to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife police, the nursing assistant allegedly used her position at the hospital to gain the trust of the patient, who had no family on the island. After he was discharged in late March, the man was taken to a home in Granadilla de Abona, where he was held against his will for seven days.
During this time, the suspects allegedly stole roughly 4,000 euros from the victim through ATM withdrawals and unauthorized bank transfers. The police investigation began after a complaint was filed on April 19, leading to the arrests on June 24.
The hospital confirmed the suspect was an employee but declined to comment on her current employment status, stating only that they are cooperating with the ongoing judicial process.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of patients who lack a support network. As the investigation continues, police are looking into the possibility that there may be other victims. The case has prompted calls for stricter oversight in healthcare settings to ensure that the trust between staff and patients cannot be exploited for criminal gain.
