The Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria in Tenerife has opened a new 460-square-meter Surgical Day Hospital designed to increase efficiency and reduce waiting lists by treating over 15,000 patients annually through ambulatory care.

The Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria in Tenerife has opened a new Surgical Day Hospital, marking a major step forward in managing Spain’s public health system. The facility focuses on major ambulatory surgery and short-stay procedures—a modern approach designed to reduce the pressure on traditional hospital wards.

The new 460-square-meter facility cost 526,000 euros to build and is located conveniently close to the operating rooms. This layout improves efficiency for patients undergoing procedures in areas like traumatology, ophthalmology, gynecology, and general surgery, as well as those needing invasive diagnostic tests. Patients can now recover in a specialized environment without needing to stay overnight.

The unit features 41 care stations, including 20 beds (five of which are monitored for faster recovery) and 21 therapeutic chairs. Management expects the new center to handle over 15,000 patients annually, a significant increase from the 6,500 treated in the previous facilities. A dedicated team of thirteen professionals—including anesthesiologists, nurses, and technicians—will staff the unit. This model prioritizes getting patients home sooner, which clinical evidence shows improves recovery and lowers the risks associated with long hospital stays.

This launch is part of the Canary Health Service’s broader effort to reduce surgical waiting lists. By moving patients through ambulatory circuits, the hospital can free up traditional beds and make better use of its operating rooms. This new unit joins the hospital's existing day services for oncology and pediatric care, helping the facility better distinguish between patients who need complex inpatient care and those who can benefit from same-day treatment.
