Tenerife Heatwave Eases as Temperatures Drop and Air Quality Improves
Tenerife and the wider Canary Islands are set for relief from extreme heat and haze this Thursday as temperatures drop and air quality improves, despite lingering warmth in some areas and strengthening winds.
Tenerife will finally get some relief from the extreme heat this Thursday as temperatures begin to drop. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the haze that has blanketed the islands is gradually clearing, improving visibility, though winds are expected to pick up in certain areas.
While the cooling will be most noticeable at higher altitudes, the south and west of the island will remain warm. Temperatures in these mid-altitude areas could still hit 30°C. In contrast, the northern coast will be much milder, thanks to cloud cover and cooling northerly winds. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will range between 21°C and 28°C, a welcome decrease from recent days.
Wind will play a major role throughout the day. A moderate northerly breeze is expected to strengthen by the afternoon, particularly around the southern slopes of the Anaga mountains, where gusts could become quite strong. Similar conditions are expected on the central peaks later in the day, while coastal areas will see lighter breezes.
The heatwave is easing across the rest of the archipelago as well, though a yellow weather warning remains in place for Gran Canaria. Temperatures there could still reach 34°C in the east, south, and west, with overnight lows staying above 25°C.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will also see temperatures fall, though inland and southern areas may still reach 30°C. A similar pattern is expected across La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro, where inland areas will stay warm and some regions will experience strong winds. Overall, the slow clearing of dust will lead to better air quality and clearer skies across the Canary Islands.
