Tenerife Halts El Pris Road Project Following Resident Protests

Construction work on the access road to El Pris in Tacoronte has been temporarily halted, marking a significant moment for coastal infrastructure management in Tenerife. Following pressure from the El Sargo neighborhood association, the project—originally set to begin on August 17—has been delayed for 15 days. This pause allows officials to re-evaluate the plan, which was designed by the island council to protect the area from storm damage but has faced strong opposition from local residents.

The dispute has led to the formation of a negotiation group involving the Tacoronte City Council, Tenerife Island Council technicians, and residents. To ensure their concerns are addressed, the community has hired legal and hydraulic engineering experts to help propose alternatives that protect both the environment and the coastal area's functionality. During these discussions, nearly 100 residents gathered at the town hall to formally submit their signatures in protest.

This situation highlights the ongoing tension between public authorities and local communities when planning civil protection projects. Balancing the urgent need for safety with public approval is often a complex challenge.
