Tenerife Grain Silo Moves Closer to Permanent Cultural Protection

The grain silo at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has moved a step closer to permanent protection. According to Monday’s Official State Gazette (BOE), the Ministry of Culture has officially begun the process to designate the building as a Property of Cultural Interest (BIC). This status provides the highest level of legal protection under Spain’s Historical Heritage Law.

The move comes as a direct response to the Port Authority’s plans to demolish the structure—a proposal that faced significant backlash from the public and professional groups, most notably the Tenerife Association of Architects.

The Ministry’s intervention follows requests from both the architects' association and the Canary Islands' regional government. The silo, which opened in 1965 based on designs from the 1950s, is the last remaining "P-type" grain silo in Spain. Its counterpart in Malaga was demolished 18 years ago, making this building a rare piece of history that documents Spain’s postwar push for economic self-sufficiency.

Technically, the building is a prime example of rationalist architecture, where function takes priority over aesthetics. Standing over 30 meters tall and covering more than 1,800 square meters, the complex includes an elevator tower with its original machinery, a main block of 65 vertical storage cells, a distribution gallery, and various office and workshop spaces.

Beyond its historical significance, the silo is a prominent landmark at the entrance to the eastern breakwater. Although it ceased operations in 1989, it remains a key visual reference point for the city. By granting it BIC status, authorities are now legally required to preserve the structure, ensuring that this piece of 20th-century industrial history is saved from demolition and protected for the future.
