Tenerife Government Building Closes Following Pest Infestation

Public services at Tenerife’s Multiple Use Building III were suspended following a pest infestation that forced an emergency evacuation and building-wide closure for fumigation.

Public services in Tenerife were disrupted this Monday after a pest infestation forced the closure of the Multiple Use Building III on Avenida de Buenos Aires. The building, which houses offices for the Ministries of Education, Agriculture, and Heritage, suspended all in-person activities following the incident.

While initial reports suggested a potential bedbug outbreak, pest control experts have ruled this out. Technicians now believe the building was infiltrated by insects from the surrounding rural area, likely entering from an adjacent undeveloped plot of land.

The crisis began on the second floor, home to the Territorial Directorate of Education. After the insects were discovered, safety protocols were triggered, and the building was evacuated. Nearly 100 employees were sent home to work remotely. While this allowed some tasks to continue, it caused significant delays for citizens who had scheduled in-person appointments.

The situation also revealed gaps in internal management. Staff on unaffected floors left their workstations out of concern, leading to a wider shutdown than was strictly necessary. This has highlighted the need for better internal communication to prevent confusion during future emergencies.

The building remains closed while authorities carry out fumigation and thorough inspections. Staff will not return until officials confirm that the facilities meet all necessary hygiene standards.
