Tenerife Gears Up for First Super Wolf Moon of 2026
Tenerife is preparing to witness the "Wolf Moon," the first full moon and a supermoon of 2026, which will illuminate the archipelago from January 3rd to 4th, bringing spring tides and offering prime viewing opportunities.
Tenerife is getting ready for the first full moon of 2026, known as the "Wolf Moon." This event kicks off the year's lunar cycle.
It will also be one of 2026's "supermoons." This means it's closer to Earth, making it look bigger and brighter in the Tenerife sky. Not only is it the first full moon of the year, but it's also the first of winter.
The moon will be at its brightest and most visible on the night of January 3rd to 4th, lighting up the whole archipelago. You can start seeing it from 11:03 AM (peninsular time) on January 3rd.
This full moon will bring "spring tides" to the Canary Islands' coasts. Over the weekend, from January 2nd to 4th, tides will be particularly high, with coefficients ranging from 87 to 92.
The name "Wolf Moon" comes from Native American tribes. They linked it to the sound of wolves howling on cold January nights, which often meant they were hungry and fighting for territory in the middle of winter.
In Europe, this moon was sometimes called the "Quiet Moon" or "Serene Moon," reflecting the peacefulness of this time of year.
Tenerife is known for having some of the best places to watch the night sky, making it easy for residents to see the first full moon of the year.
Teide National Park is a top spot for moon gazing. Visitors can get a clear view of the sky, far from city lights, from areas like Mirador de Izaña, Parador Nacional del Teide, El Portillo, and Las Cañadas.
