Tenerife Football Player Hospitalized After Fan Attack
A player from UD Hermigua/CD Agulo was hospitalized after being punched by a fan of Atlético Barranco Hondo during a regional football match in Tenerife, leading to the game's suspension and the visiting club's plan for legal action.
Violence in football, particularly in local leagues, has surfaced again with a serious incident in Tenerife. Last Sunday, a player from UD Hermigua/CD Agulo was physically attacked by a fan of Atlético Barranco Hondo. The club from La Gomera shared details and videos of the incident on its official Facebook page.
The incident happened at the Los Barranquillos football pitch in Barranco Hondo, Candelaria. It was during a match in Group 2 of Tenerife's Regional Primera league. In the 73rd minute, with the visiting team leading 3-4, an argument broke out between players on the pitch. At that point, a local fan, who was also a relative of a player from the home team, ran onto the field. He then punched a player from the visiting team in the face. The player was hit so hard that he had to be taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Because of the attack, the referee immediately stopped the game, saying it was impossible to guarantee the safety of everyone at the stadium. UD Hermigua/CD Agulo expressed their deep regret, calling the attack completely out of line with the spirit of the game. They also stated their plan to take legal action to condemn all forms of violence in sports. The club reaffirmed its commitment to respect and fair play, wishing their injured player a quick recovery and offering him their full support.
Incidents like this not only damage the reputation of the sport but also raise serious questions about security at venues and the responsibilities of clubs and regional football associations. The assault could have consequences both within football, with potential penalties for the local club or the attacker, and legally, as it is considered a crime of injury under Spanish law.
