Over 2,000 personnel and volunteers are finalizing complex security and logistical preparations for Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to Tenerife on June 12.

Preparations for Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Tenerife on June 12 have entered a critical stage. More than 300 volunteers have begun training to coordinate the Pope’s two main stops: a meeting with migrant groups at Plaza del Cristo in La Laguna and a mass at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

In total, 2,000 people are involved in the operation, including those assisting with communion. Led by coordinator Pedro López, the team is divided into seven areas, covering everything from security and access to healthcare and media relations. To keep things organized, staff will wear color-coded uniforms, helping them manage crowds expected to reach 4,000 in La Laguna and up to 40,000 in the capital.

The security plan for the Pope’s visits to the Bishopric and the Las Raíces reception center is strict. Attendees are prohibited from bringing portable chairs or aluminum containers. Everyone will pass through security scanners, and guests must follow specific routes to their seats. Punctuality is essential: venue doors will close 45 minutes before the Pope arrives, and attendees will not be allowed to move between the two event locations during the day.

This massive effort highlights the technical complexity of hosting such a high-profile event in the Canary Islands. The organizers, who are managing a diverse team of professionals and volunteers, view the visit as a historic milestone for the region. With 29 days to go, the team is focused on balancing technical logistics with crowd management to ensure the day runs smoothly.
