Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, which inspired Agatha Christie during her 1927 recovery visit, will host its biennial International Festival honoring the author from November 6 to 15.

Agatha Christie chose Tenerife to help her recover during a tough time in her life. Her stay at the Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz began a special connection between the author and the island.

The British writer was dealing with her mother's recent death and the end of her first marriage. This was also the period of her famous disappearance, which happened after she discovered her husband, Colonel Archibald Christie, was unfaithful. She vanished for days before being found in a hotel.

This difficult experience led her to seek psychiatric help and a peaceful place to rest. She chose Tenerife, arriving in 1927 with her daughter and secretary. She stayed at the Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz, a popular choice for European high society in the 20th century.

In Puerto de la Cruz, on the Paseo de los Cipreses, you'll find the famous Agatha Christie stairs. This is one of the most photographed spots in the area. Each step is painted a different color and features the title of one of her books, creating a visual tribute to her writing. This spot also offers stunning views of the town's unique volcanic black sand beach. The promenade itself was the first place in Spain to be named after her.

Since 2007, Puerto de la Cruz has hosted the biennial Agatha Christie International Festival. This festival honors the British writer, whose 1927 visit to the city and its landscapes inspired stories like "The Man from the Sea." The event features a broad cultural program including literature, theater, film, exhibitions, music, and food, all centered around the theme of mystery. This year, it will take place from November 6 to 15.
