Tenerife Faces Weather Divide for St. John’s Eve Celebrations
Tenerife faces a weather divide this St. John’s Eve, with cloudy, damp conditions expected in the north while the south enjoys clear skies and strong winds are forecast for the island’s central peaks.
St. John’s Eve in Tenerife will see a clear divide in weather this year, shaped by the island’s unique landscape and the trade winds. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the island is in a period of transition, leading to very different conditions depending on where you are.
If you are in the north, expect more unstable weather. Towns like Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Los Realejos, and San Cristóbal de La Laguna are likely to see persistent clouds and a chance of light rain from the 23rd into the morning of the 24th. This could affect traditional events, such as the goat bathing. In contrast, those celebrating in the south—such as Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas—and in western areas like Puerto de Santiago, can look forward to clear skies, coastal breezes, and little to no rain.
The weather agency has also issued a warning for the island’s central peaks. Strong southwesterly winds are expected to pick up on Tuesday afternoon and continue through Wednesday. If you are planning any outdoor activities or driving in high-altitude areas, please exercise caution, as these gusts can be quite powerful.
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the weather will be a mix of both, with cloudy intervals but a low chance of rain. Regardless of where you are, it is a good idea to bring a light jacket. While temperatures will remain steady, the combination of humidity and the night breeze may make it feel cooler than the thermometer suggests, especially if you plan to stay on the beach until the early hours.
