The Tenerife Island Council has committed 160 million euros to maintain free public transport through 2025, a policy that has already replaced over 63 million private car journeys since its inception.

The Tenerife Island Council has reaffirmed its commitment to free public transport, making it the cornerstone of its mobility policy through 2025. The Council has pledged 160 million euros of its own funds to support the service, covering more than half of the total budget required.

The remaining funding comes from state contributions managed by the regional government. The Council has confirmed the receipt of 37.1 million euros, which will be fully paid out this year. This money will go directly to the operators Titsa and Metrotenerife—receiving 24.8 million and 12.3 million euros, respectively—to cover operating costs and offset the loss of fare revenue.

Since the policy began on January 1, 2023, there have been 288 million trips taken under the scheme. The Island Council estimates that this has removed over 63 million private car journeys from the island's roads. Island President Rosa Dávila described this as a major step toward reducing traffic congestion. Thanks to the recently approved Sustainable Mobility Law, free travel for Canary Resident Pass holders, young people, the elderly, and people with disabilities is guaranteed until 2026.

In addition to transport, the Government Council has approved several other initiatives:

  • Municipal Training: A 2026 plan to provide technical training for municipalities with limited resources.
  • Heritage Conservation: A new 700,000-euro fund for restoring historic properties, adding to the 6.3 million euros already invested since 2023.
  • Agriculture and Tourism: 150,000 euros will support native livestock breeds, while 16 million euros will be invested over the next five years to improve tourism products and marine-related projects.
  • International Aid: 600,000 euros has been allocated to support NGO projects in West Africa.
