Tenerife is designating new pet-friendly beach zones to accommodate dog owners while enforcing strict health and safety regulations to avoid significant fines under Spain’s Animal Welfare Law.

Balancing beach tourism with pet ownership remains a challenge in the Canary Islands. In Tenerife, local authorities are working to designate specific pet-friendly areas to help owners avoid fines, which can reach up to 3,000 euros depending on local rules and the nature of the violation.

Spain’s recent Animal Welfare Law has placed a greater emphasis on owner responsibility. To meet the growing demand for pet-friendly summer activities, Tenerife has officially opened designated spots, including El Puertito in Güímar, El Confital in Granadilla de Abona, and El Callao in Arona.

These beaches vary significantly, ranging from urban settings to rugged, natural landscapes in the south. Because of this, owners need to take extra care. For example, volcanic sand can get very hot, so it is important to protect your dog’s paws and always carry plenty of fresh water and waste bags. Meanwhile, officials in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are currently studying whether they can open more coastal areas to dogs to meet public demand while still following local regulations.

Regardless of the location, strict health rules apply. To access these beaches, your pet must be microchipped, registered, and up to date on all vaccinations. Dogs classified as potentially dangerous must wear a muzzle and be kept on a leash at all times.

Authorities emphasize that you should always check local signage before heading to the beach, as rules can change based on the season or current coastal conditions. Ultimately, owners are legally responsible for their pets, meaning they must keep their animals under control and ensure the beach remains clean at all times.
