Tenerife Expands Los Cristianos Transport Interchange Project to Ease Traffic Congestion
The Tenerife Island Council has expanded the Los Cristianos transport interchange project, increasing its budget to 601,875 euros to include a critical underpass extension aimed at alleviating heavy traffic congestion.
Plans to reorganize traffic in the south of Tenerife are being expanded following the Island Council’s approval of significant changes to the Los Cristianos transport interchange project. Official documents show that the project’s scope has grown, increasing the budget for drafting the plans from 481,500 euros to 601,875 euros.
The main update involves extending the Avenida de Chayofita underpass. It will now reach Calle Pedregales, rather than stopping at Avenida Juan Carlos I (TF-665). This change is a technical necessity: the Chayofita roundabout currently handles over 6,000 vehicles per hour, and the extension is needed to manage this heavy flow. Island President Rosa Dávila stated that this is part of a wider strategy to balance port activity, tourism, and urban development in the El Mojón area.
The project, which will be carried out by the firm Palerm & Tabares de Nava S.L.P. over the next five months, also includes new connections to Avenida Hermano Pedro and Avenida Juan Carlos I. These additions are designed to prevent traffic bottlenecks and ensure smooth movement into the town of Arona. The work also covers essential infrastructure upgrades, including security, sanitation, and telecommunications systems.
Eulalia García, head of the Mobility department, noted that these adjustments were made in coordination with Titsa, Metrotenerife, the Arona City Council, and the Canary Islands government. This project is part of a broader effort by the Council to reduce congestion across the island, similar to recent improvements made to the Valle de Güímar industrial access and the La Laguna Interchange.
