Tenerife Expands Anti-Sexual Assault Protocol to More Nightlife Venues

Tenerife is strengthening its nightlife safety strategy by adding six new venues in Santa Cruz to its anti-sexual assault protocol. This initiative aims to make party spaces safer through specialized staff training. According to the Tenerife Island Council, there are now 15 participating establishments across the island, including venues in Adeje, Arona, Puerto de la Cruz, and the capital.

The program focuses on active prevention. The newly added businesses—Bulan Chill Out-Restaurant, The Red Lion British Pub, Bambú Lounge Tenerife, Azotea Urban 180, Dubliner, and Sabbath—have committed to training their employees to spot potential risks early. This is crucial, as victims often struggle to report harassment while it is happening. Staff are now provided with flexible audiovisual training, enabling them to act as the first line of defense and coordinate directly with law enforcement.

Island Council President Rosa Dávila and Equality and Diversity Director Patricia León emphasized that the program’s success relies on close cooperation between the public and private sectors. The Council plans to continue expanding this initiative, with the goal of making these safety protocols a standard across all nightlife venues on the island.

This effort is part of a broader policy to prevent gender-based violence in social settings. Beyond staff training, the initiative includes multilingual signage, the redesign of physical spaces to improve safety, and clear, established action plans. The partnership between the Island Council and the Santa Cruz City Council follows months of collaboration with local business owners, reflecting a commitment to giving the hospitality industry the tools needed to combat sexual assault and ensure a safer environment for everyone.
