Tenerife Exhibition Highlights Spain’s Role in American Independence

The historical role of Spain in the American Revolution is being highlighted in a new exhibition at the Palacio de Carta in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Titled Spaniards in the Birth of a Nation, the traveling exhibit explores the Spanish Crown’s vital contributions to the war for independence between 1775 and 1783.

Organized by the Canary Islands Military History and Culture Center, the exhibition marks the 250th anniversary of the United States' independence. It emphasizes the strategic importance of the Canary Islands, which served as a crucial hub for logistics, communications, and supplies during the conflict against British forces.

The exhibition uses a modern, modular design featuring high-resolution panels and an audiovisual room that explains the complex geopolitical alliances of the 18th century. Supported by the Santa Cruz City Council, the project aims to make history accessible to everyone through interactive resources and reenactments.

At the opening ceremony, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez noted that Spanish financial support and diplomacy were essential to the success of the American Revolution. Local officials also praised the choice of the Palacio de Carta as the venue, noting that it adds significant cultural value to the city.

The exhibition is free to the public and will remain open until August 16. Visiting hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. To engage younger visitors, the exhibit also includes educational displays featuring historical figures and Playmobil sets.
