Tenerife emergency services responded to 19 weather-related incidents caused by strong winds, prompting local authorities to urge residents to better secure infrastructure and vegetation.

Recent strong winds in Tenerife have highlighted how vulnerable the island’s infrastructure is to severe weather. According to the Tenerife Fire Consortium, emergency crews were called out 19 times over the past few days to deal with incidents caused by the unstable conditions.

Most of these call-outs involved clearing debris from roads, such as fallen trees and loose urban fixtures like fencing and tarps that were blown over by the gusts. The damage was most significant in Adeje and several northern towns, including Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Úrsula, Santiago del Teide, La Orotava, and El Sauzal.

In addition to weather-related issues, firefighters handled several other emergencies. These included putting out a fire in a waste management truck at Las Mesas Park in Santa Cruz on Sunday morning, assisting at the scene of a car accident in La Laguna where a vehicle had overturned, and rescuing a swimmer in difficulty at Charco de La Laja.

This busy period for emergency services serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols in Tenerife. Given the island’s unique terrain, wind can quickly turn everyday objects into hazards. Local authorities are now emphasizing the need to regularly check the condition of trees and ensure that street furniture is properly secured to keep pedestrians and drivers safe during future weather alerts.
