Tenerife’s economy is transitioning to a period of steady, moderate growth as a resilient labor market and strong industrial performance drive unemployment to a low of 10.28%.

Tenerife’s economy is settling into a period of steady, moderate growth following a fast-paced start to the year. According to the latest Island Economic Situation Bulletin for the second quarter of 2026, the island is seeing a transition toward more controlled expansion. Island councilor Manuel Fernández and Lola Pérez, director of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce, noted that while a slight dip in international tourism has slowed momentum, the island’s business sector remains remarkably resilient.

The labor market is the primary driver of this stability. By the end of June, Tenerife’s unemployment rate had dropped to 10.28%—an improvement of 0.8 percentage points compared to last year and well below the 11.6% average for the Canary Islands. In total, the island added 4,470 jobs over the year, bringing the total number of employed people to 447,920, while the number of unemployed residents fell by 3,730.

Employment figures remain strong, with 431,623 people registered for social security in June, a 1.9% increase over the same period in 2025. The industrial sector performed particularly well, adding 549 jobs to reach a total of 18,464 workers, while unemployment within that sector dropped by 7.3%.

Looking ahead, councilor Manuel Fernández emphasized the importance of boosting the competitiveness of small and medium-sized businesses, which are vital to creating new opportunities during this period of economic cooling. To support this, the Cabildo de Tenerife plans to approve its 2027 budget during the November plenary session. By finalizing the budget early, the government aims to ensure that funds for the business sector are available from the first day of the year, providing stability and certainty for local businesses as the economy continues to build on its solid foundation.
