Santa Cruz police have initiated criminal proceedings against a 40-year-old woman caught driving 110 km/h in a 40 km/h urban zone in Tenerife.

Road safety in Tenerife is back in the spotlight after Santa Cruz police caught a 40-year-old woman driving at dangerous speeds through the city.

The incident occurred just before noon on May 13. Police speed cameras on Avenida Luis Celso García Guadalupe in the Añaza district clocked the driver at 110 km/h—far exceeding the area’s 40 km/h limit.

Under the Spanish Penal Code, driving 60 km/h over the limit in an urban area is considered a criminal offense. Because the driver was traveling 70 km/h over the limit, the police have initiated criminal proceedings against her.

Authorities are highlighting this case to emphasize the severity of such reckless behavior. Speed limits in urban areas are in place to protect pedestrians and other drivers, as high speeds significantly reduce reaction times in emergencies. Local police continue to warn that speeding is not just a traffic violation, but a major factor in serious, life-altering accidents.
