Tenerife’s second Island Animal Welfare Fair doubled its exhibition space this June, bringing together experts and volunteers to promote responsible pet ownership and combat animal abandonment.

Tenerife has reached a significant milestone in its efforts to protect domestic animals. The second Island Animal Welfare Fair, held on June 13 and 14 at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Trade Fair Center, saw its exhibition space double in size. With 65 booths dedicated to animal care and awareness, the event highlights a growing commitment to professionalizing the sector and supporting the network of organizations dedicated to pet welfare.

Organized by the Tenerife Island Council’s Department of Animal Welfare, the fair serves as more than just an exhibition; it is a forum for dialogue between government officials, legal and veterinary experts, and volunteers. The attendance of representatives from the Official College of Veterinarians and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Bar Association at the opening ceremony emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to responsible pet ownership, particularly in light of new national laws aimed at curbing abandonment and promoting ethical adoption.

Beyond the impressive turnout, the Island Council focused on recognizing the animal protection groups that drive these initiatives. The weekend’s program—featuring adoption parades, training workshops, and technical demonstrations—was designed to educate the public and reduce abandonment rates through family engagement.

The Trade Fair Center’s vice-presidency noted the logistical effort required to adapt the venue, which allowed for a larger number of visitors and improved efficiency for participating organizations. With this successful second edition, the island aims to set a new standard in the Canary Islands for how local governments can combine social awareness with practical, on-the-ground support for animal welfare.
