Tenerife Deploys High-Capacity Double-Decker Buses to Ease Commuter Congestion

Tenerife has taken a major step toward improving public transport this week by introducing high-capacity, double-decker buses on key northern routes. The island’s transport operator, Titsa, has launched these vehicles on routes 100 and 108, which connect Puerto de la Cruz and Icod de los Vinos to the capital.

This change addresses the heavy demand on the TF-5 motorway, where these lines see over two million trips every year. Most passengers are commuters traveling for work or education, and the new buses offer 85 seats—a 44% increase over the previous 59-seat capacity. Island President Rosa Dávila oversaw the launch, which follows a similar strategy already in place on the TF-1 motorway.

The new buses are also designed to be safer and more sustainable. They feature advanced technology, including alcohol interlock systems, blind-spot sensors to protect pedestrians and cyclists, interior security cameras, and digital side-view mirrors.

The Island Council plans to have a total of 13 double-decker buses in service soon; ten are already running, three are being added shortly, and five more have been ordered for 2027. This is part of a wider modernization plan that has seen 125 million euros invested over the last three years to acquire 351 new vehicles.

These improvements come as Tenerife sees record-breaking public transport use, with over 87 million passengers recorded last year. Beyond increasing capacity, the fleet renewal has already helped reduce the carbon footprint of interurban services by 7%. With another 57 buses expected by the end of this year, the island continues its efforts to manage heavy traffic and improve daily travel for residents.
