An expert group has been created in Tenerife to combat phylloxera and protect local winemaking after the pest was detected in vineyards.
In Tenerife, phylloxera has been discovered in the vineyards – this is a harmful insect that damages grapes. To quickly deal with this, the local authorities (Cabildo de Tenerife) convened the Wine Council. There, it was decided to create a special group of experts who will monitor the situation and look for ways to combat the pest.
The meeting, which took place at the House of Wine, was attended by representatives from various wine-growing regions of Tenerife, viticulture specialists, organizations that help winemakers, and government officials.
The expert group will meet weekly to assess the spread of phylloxera and propose solutions. The Wine Council will meet monthly to keep winemakers up to date with the latest news and what to do.
The head of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, said that wine in Tenerife is our pride and an important part of the economy, so they will do everything possible to protect it.
Other government officials also assured that the situation is under control and the quality of the wine will not be affected.
Since the end of July, local authorities have already taken several important steps:
- Developed a mobile application to speed up paperwork and inspect vineyards.
Phylloxera is an insect that lives on the roots of grapes and damages them. As a result, the plant cannot properly receive water and nutrients, weakens, and may even die. Phylloxera can also damage grape leaves.
To cope with this problem, it is necessary to carefully treat the vineyards and cooperate between winemakers, authorities, and experts.
