Tenerife Court to Hear Drug Trafficking Case Involving Repeat Offender
The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will hear a drug trafficking case on May 6th, where prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence for a repeat offender caught with cocaine.
The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to hear a drug trafficking case on May 6th that will test how the Spanish Penal Code handles repeat offenders. Prosecutors are seeking a five-year and three-month prison sentence for a man accused of selling narcotics.
The case stems from a police stop where officers seized nearly 80 grams of 80% pure cocaine. Experts estimate the drugs have a street value of 4,300 euros. Police also confiscated 485 euros in cash during the arrest. In addition to the prison term, the prosecution is requesting a 12,000-euro fine.
The severity of the requested sentence is due to the defendant’s criminal history. Because he previously served a three-year sentence for similar crimes, prosecutors are applying an aggravating factor for recidivism, which significantly increases the potential penalty.
The incident began during a routine patrol when officers spotted three people acting suspiciously. The defendant tried to flee on foot but was quickly caught and searched. This case highlights the ongoing issue of retail drug distribution in the region and the legal system's approach to repeat offenders who return to criminal activity after serving time.
