The Tenerife Island Council has approved a new agreement to decouple Puerto de la Cruz’s modernization plan from the stalled port project, prioritizing the development of sports facilities, green spaces, and sustainable infrastructure.

The Tenerife Island Council has officially approved a new agreement with the regional government, marking a major turning point for Puerto de la Cruz. This decision breathes new life into the municipality’s Modernization and Improvement Plan (PMM) by separating the city’s development goals from the stalled port project, which faced significant environmental hurdles earlier this year.

Led by Alicia Leirachá of the Island Directorate of Strategic Projects, this new approach aims to restart initiatives that had been stuck in administrative limbo. Island Vice President Lope Afonso emphasized that the strategy is shifting away from past delays to focus on getting things done. Key priorities include building a new sports complex in San Felipe, improving the area around the Tenerife Aquatic Sports Center, and developing a new maritime park. The plan also places a strong emphasis on sustainable travel, increasing parking, and restoring pedestrian and green spaces.

Beyond construction, the updated plan is designed to revitalize the area as a tourist destination. It incorporates climate resilience and urban greening, aiming to balance a competitive service sector with a better quality of life for local residents. By taking control of the project timelines, the City and Island Councils hope to protect the municipality from the bureaucratic red tape that has slowed investment in the Orotava Valley for years. Ultimately, this shift is a direct response to public demand for real, tangible improvements and faster administrative action.
