Tenerife is looking for a company to restore the Altavista Refuge for €5.9 million.
The Tenerife government has announced a tender to find a company to manage the Altavista Refuge in Teide National Park, which is planned to reopen after 2020 for the safety of tourists and the protection of nature.
In Tenerife, the local authorities (Cabildo) have given the green light to a tender to find a company that will manage the Altavista Refuge in Teide National Park.
The contract is worth 5.9 million euros. Initially, it will be concluded for two years, but then it can be extended four more times for one year each. This was announced by the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Davila, and her deputy, Lope Afonso, at a press conference where government decisions were discussed.
Davila reminded that the shelter is planned to be reopened by the end of the year. It has been closed since 2020. The opening is important for the safety of tourists, as there were more than 490 different emergencies in the area in 2023.
"The shelter is conveniently located, so it will become an important point where people can be rescued, given shelter and medical assistance in the highlands," said the head of the island. She also added that "the opening will help to bring order to visits to Teide, reduce damage to nature from illegal overnight stays, protect flora and fauna, and offer tourists better conditions for recreation."
With this decision, the local authorities are betting on the shelter operating in an environmentally friendly way and through a partnership between the state and private business. This should ensure the preservation of nature and the provision of quality services in one of the most important places in Teide National Park.
