Tenerife Council Launches Major Infrastructure and Social Housing Overhaul
The Tenerife Island Council has launched a comprehensive infrastructure and social development roadmap, featuring a major housing project in Granadilla de Abona, an educational modernization program, and urban renewal initiatives across the island.
The Tenerife Island Council has approved a new roadmap to overhaul the island’s infrastructure and public services. This strategy aims to address growing social and demographic pressures by focusing on social housing, education, and urban renewal.
A key part of this plan is the "Cuevas Cho Portada" project in Granadilla de Abona, which will see the construction of 47 residential buildings in the Los Hueros area. The project will cost 9.6 million euros, with the regional government covering 60% and the Island Council providing the remaining 40%. To speed up the process and tackle the southern region's housing shortage, the Council is fast-tracking the project through an open bidding process.
In education, the Council has approved the PIALTE+ program for the 2026-2027 school year. With a budget of over 749,000 euros, the program will fund 11 projects designed to modernize learning for students from preschool through high school. It focuses on teaching critical reading, creative writing, and digital skills to better prepare students for the demands of the 21st century.
Finally, the Governing Council has updated its municipal cooperation plan for 2024-2026. This initiative will focus on improving public spaces in towns including Güímar, Los Realejos, and Buenavista del Norte. By prioritizing accessibility and sustainability, the Council aims to enhance urban environments and improve the overall quality of life for residents across Tenerife.
