Tenerife Council Invests €5 Million to Boost Local Employment

The Tenerife Island Council has launched a new initiative to tackle unemployment, investing over five million euros to create jobs and support local organizations. This funding is split into two main areas: direct hiring by the local government and grants for non-profit groups.

The largest portion of the budget—more than four million euros—is dedicated to the "Tenerife Advances with New Employment Opportunities" program. Backed by a 3.8 million euro grant from the Canary Islands Employment Service, this plan aims to help 109 people enter the workforce. Participants will be offered one-year training contracts, focusing primarily on those starting their careers. They will work across 23 different sectors, including digitalization, innovation, historical heritage, agriculture, and social services. In addition to a salary, participants will receive professional mentoring to boost their long-term career prospects.

Separately, the Island Government has set aside 1.5 million euros to support non-profit organizations. This funding will provide guidance and training for people who face significant challenges in finding work, such as the long-term unemployed, individuals with disabilities, those over 45, survivors of gender-based violence, and migrants or those at risk of social exclusion. Grants will range from 50,000 to 250,000 euros per project, with priority given to innovative and sustainable proposals that help diversify the island’s economy.

By combining direct government roles with specialized support from social organizations, the Council aims to address immediate unemployment while providing workers with the skills and experience needed for long-term success in a competitive job market.
