Tenerife Council in Turmoil After Vox Councilor’s Controversial Remarks on National Origin
Tenerife Island Council is facing a political crisis after Vox councilor Naím Yánez refused to retract comments questioning the representativeness of citizens based on their national origin, prompting the PSOE to demand a formal condemnation from the governing coalition.
A political crisis has erupted within the Tenerife Island Council following comments by Vox councilor Naím Yánez, who suggested that a person’s national origin determines their level of "representativeness." During a recent plenary session, Yánez claimed that he feels more of a connection to a citizen from León than to someone from Senegal. This statement has caused a sharp divide within the island’s governing body.
Aarón Afonso, spokesperson for the Socialist Group (PSOE), has led the pushback, calling the remarks a violation of democratic values. He has demanded that the governing partners—the Canarian Coalition and the People's Party—break their silence and formally condemn the comments. When given the chance by the Council Presidency to clarify or retract his statement, Yánez refused and stood by his original position.
The PSOE views this as a serious ethical issue rather than a minor political disagreement. Socialists argue that this rhetoric stigmatizes the Senegalese community, which has a long history of integration on the island, and raises questions about the governing agreements between conservative parties. Afonso has specifically challenged the island’s vice president, Lope Afonso, to distance himself from his coalition partner, citing his experience in managing diverse municipalities.
This incident highlights growing tensions in Canarian politics over the boundaries of acceptable public discourse. While the PSOE emphasizes the islands' history as a place of welcome and migration, the opposition is using the controversy to question the stability and ideological consistency of the current island government. The Socialists are calling for a formal condemnation to ensure the Council reaffirms its commitment to equality for all citizens, regardless of their background.
